Can Dental Implants Be Removed and Replaced with Dentures?

Medical Dental Turkey

Dental implants are a long-lasting solution for replacing missing teeth, offering a sensation very close to that of natural teeth. However, issues such as bone loss around the implant, infections, or changes in a patient's overall health may necessitate the removal (explantation) of an implant. So, is it possible to remove an implant that has been in place for years and transition to removable dentures?

Can dental implants be removed and replaced with dentures?

In this guide, we explore the circumstances under which implants might need to be removed, as well as key considerations when transitioning to dentures. For reliable and healthy dental implants in Antalya, you can contact our dental clinic Medical Dental Turkey .

Can dental implants be removed?

Yes, dental implants can be removed, but it's a job for your dentist. Once an implant has joined with your jawbone, taking it out needs much more care than removing a natural tooth.

When does the dentist remove an implant?

In rare cases, such as when an implant becomes inflamed, infected, or loses its functionality, it may need to be removed. While the initial goal is always to save the implant, this is not always possible. The most common reasons for removing an implant include the following:

  • The implant is loose: Your implant shouldn't move at all. If it does, the bone may not have grown around it properly, or it may have lost its support.
  • There's an infection: An infection around your implant can damage the gums and bone. We may have to take it out if we can't get the infection under control.
  • You've lost too much bone: The bone is what holds your implant in place. If too much of it disappears, the implant may no longer stay firm.
  • The implant is in the wrong place: It might be too close to a nerve or sitting at the wrong angle. If it's causing trouble and we can't fix the problem, taking it out may be the best option.
  • The pain won't go away: A little pain after surgery is normal. But pain that carries on for weeks, or starts long after treatment, needs checking. Sometimes the implant is the cause.
  • The implant has broken: This doesn't happen often, but an implant can crack or break. If we can't repair the damage, we may need to remove it.

Are there any risks involved in replacing implants with dentures?

Yes, there are a few. You may have some pain, swelling or bleeding after your implants are removed. There's also a small chance of infection or damage to the bone around them.

What happens after an implant is removed?

The area needs time to heal. Depending on your case, we may place a bone graft, fit a temporary denture, or both, before making your final denture. Your dentist will explain the timing once they've checked your gums and jawbone.

When is it not recommended to replace implants with dentures?

We usually don't recommend replacing your implants with dentures if they're healthy, feel firm and aren't causing any problems.

Taking them out would mean another surgery that you may not need. Dentures can also take time to get used to, especially if you've had fixed teeth for years. If you've lost a lot of jawbone, your dentures may not fit well or stay in place when you eat or talk. And if you have gum disease or an infection, we'd treat that first.

Should you choose a denture or an implant?

You can choose according to the table below:

If your gums are healthy, you have enough jawbone and you're happy to have a minor operation, implants could be a good option for you.

If you want teeth like your natural teeth, dental implants surgery is better. They're also good choice if you don't want your teeth moving when you eat or talk.

You might also prefer implants if you want to enjoy most of your favorite foods, don't like the idea of taking your teeth out at night or want to avoid using denture adhesive.

If you have one or two missing teeth, implants can replace them without needing support from the teeth next to them. They also help keep the jawbone from shrinking where you've lost teeth.

But if you do not want a surgery, have a limited budget or want a treatment that takes less time, dentures may suit you better. They're also worth considering if you have health problems that make implant surgery unsuitable.

Your dentist will examine your remaining teeth, check your gums and jawbone, and take X-rays to see how much bone you have. After that, they can explain which treatment is safer and more suitable for your mouth.
