Tooth colour is not just about how white your teeth look. Natural teeth have different shades. Some look warmer and creamier. Some are brighter. Others have a slightly grey tone.
Dentists use shade categories to compare these small differences. We look at the main colour, how light or dark the tooth is and how strong the shade appears.
Finally, tooth shade schedules help us choose a better match for veneers, crowns, fillings or implants. The idea is simple: the new tooth should look like it belongs in your smile.
What is the whitest tooth shade?
The whitest shades are usually called bleach shades, such as BL1 or 0M1.
These shades are much brighter than most natural teeth. They are often chosen for veneers, crowns or a very white smile makeover.
But very white does not always mean better. A shade can look great on one person and too artificial on another. We usually look at your skin tone, face and the colour of your other teeth before choosing it.
The best result is a smile that looks bright, clean and still suits you.
A1 vs B1 teeth shade: Which one is whiter?
B1 is the whiter shade. When a study in Tamil Nadu tested A1, B1 and B2 against different skin tones, they found that 92.26% of light-skin participants rated B1 as “extremely attractive” compared to darker or lighter tones.
A1 is still a light tooth colour, but it looks a little warmer. B1 looks brighter and slightly cleaner.
This is why B1 is often used when someone wants a white smile that still looks natural. A1 can be a better match if the other teeth have a warmer tone.
The difference is quite small. We do not choose a shade only by looking at a chart. Your skin tone, the colour of your natural teeth and how many teeth we are treating all matter. If we are restoring just one or two teeth, matching the surrounding teeth is usually more important than simply choosing the whitest shade.
What is the 0M1 tooth shade?
0M1 is a very bright white tooth shade.
0M1 sits in the bleach shade group. So, this is much lighter than shades such as A1 or B1.
We mostly use this tone if someone desires a noticeably white smile, especially for porcelain veneers, crowns or a full smile makeover.
It is a strong white, so it does not suit everyone in the same way. On some faces, it can look fresh and clean. On others, it may look a little too bright.

What are Hollywood white teeth shades?
'Hollywood white' usually means the very bright shades used for veneers, crowns and smile makeovers.
These shades are lighter than most natural teeth. Names such as BL1, BL2 and 0M1 are common examples.
BL1 and 0M1 are at the very bright end. They give that clear, polished white look many people think of as a Hollywood smile. BL2 is still very white, but it looks a little softer.
There is no single Hollywood shade that suits everyone. Your skin tone, lip colour and the shape of your smile are all important criteria.

How to choose the right tooth shade for your smile?
We do not choose a tooth shade by looking at the shade chart for a few seconds.
First, we look at your natural teeth in good light. We check which shades are already in your smile and whether your teeth look more warm, creamy, bright or slightly grey.
Then we compare a few shade tabs next to your teeth. We usually do this before the teeth become dry, because dry teeth can look whiter than they really are.
We also look at your skin tone, lips and face. A shade that looks perfect on one person can look too bright or too yellow on someone else.
If we are making only one crown or veneer, matching the teeth next to it is very important. If we are changing the whole smile, we have more freedom to choose a brighter shade.
We may also take photos and check the shade from different angles and under different light.
Then we talk about the result you want. Some patients want a very natural smile. Others want a clear, bright Hollywood look.

How to maintain a bright white smile?
A white smile stays bright for longer with a few simple habits:
- Brush your teeth morning and night, and clean between them too. This will stop plaque and stains from sitting on your teeth.
- Coffee, tea and cigarettes are important factors! They all change your new colour quite quickly. Have some water afterwards when you can.
- A dental cleaning is also an important step! Your dentist removes tartar and surface stains that normal brushing may leave behind.
- If you have had whitening before, the colour may fade after a while. A small top-up can bring it back.
- Do not keep using strong whitening powders or rough toothpastes. They can wear down the tooth surface.
- Crowns and veneers are different. Whitening does not change their colour. If one tooth starts looking darker than the others, have it checked.
