How many stitches are usually placed after a dental implant?
Most single dental implants need around 1 to 3 stitches. One stitch is enough for a small and clean incision, while a wider opening or a bone graft supported treatment may need 3 to 5. What matters most is not the exact stitches number, but whether the gum edges meet gently, without tension and the operated area stays well protected while it is healing.

Why do all dental implant surgeries require stitches?
Not every dental implant treatment needs stitches. If the treatment is flapless, the implant may be placed through a very small opening. So, the gum of patient can heal without sutures are done. We usually use stitches if we lift the gum, need a bone graft or the area needs to be closed securely. Stitches help keep the gum edges together, protect the surgical area and reduce unwanted movement during the first days of healing.
Stitches also reduce minor bleeding and help keep food particles away from the surgical site. This becomes even more important if we do bone graft.
What type of stitches are used after dental implants?
Two main types of stitches are common for implant treatment: dissolvable and non-dissolvable.
Dissolvable stitches like Vicryl, slowly break down on their own. This is enough for a simple implant site.
Non-dissolvable stitches like nylon, polypropylene or PTFE are good option if gum of patient needs to stay firmly closed, especially after a bone graft. Dentist removes these stitches after healing.
Does getting implant stitches removed hurt?
No, removing of dental implant stitches does not give you hurt. You don't need to worry. We simply lift the knot, cut the thread and slide it out gently. We are only doing our work on the surface of the healed gum, not the implant, bone or deeper nerves. You may feel a bit pull if the area is still tender and sensitive. But it goes only a few seconds, and you don't need an aesthetic.
How long do stitches stay in after dental implant surgery?
Implant stitches usually stay in surgical site for about 7 - 10 days. If we do bone graft or opened a larger area of gum, 10 to 14 days are better settled of wound. Stitches should not be removed too early, because the gum can pull apart before formation of secure seal. Non-dissolving stitches should not be left much longer. Because plaque and food can collect around the thread. This can cause soreness or gum irritation.
Can you have Turkey dental implants stitches without pain or swelling?
Yes, implant stitches themselves usually do not cause pain, and some patients have very little swelling after treatment. The area is fully numbed while we place the implant and close the gum, so you do not feel the stitches going in. Once the numbness wears off, mild tenderness or swelling can still happen, especially after several implants or a bone graft.
When to contact your dentist about stitches after an implant?
A little soreness, slight bleeding and some swellings are normal during the first few days. Still, contact your dentist if you notice any of the following:
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing: This needs urgent medical attention, especially if the swelling is spreading into your face, neck or throat.
- Bleeding that will not stop: Contact your dentist if bright-red bleeding goes on despite holding firm pressure with clean gauze.
- Swelling that keeps getting worse: Swelling often increases for two or three days. If it suddenly becomes larger, hard or more painful after that, let your dentist know.
- Pus, fever or a bad taste: Yellow discharge, an unpleasant smell, fever or feeling generally unwell may point to an infection.
- Stronger pain: Some tenderness is okay, but pain should gradually reduce. Pain that gets worse or does not respond to the recommended medication should be checked.
- The gum has opened: Contact your dentist if the wound edges separate or you see the implant, membrane or bone-graft material underneath.
- The stitches come out too early: One loose thread is not always a problem. But you should call if several stitches break during the first few days or the wound begins to open.
- Numbness does not improve: Numbness from an aesthetic should wear off. Tingling, burning or numbness that continues or becomes worse needs an early review.
- The implant or healing cap feels loose: Stitches may feel slightly mobile, but the implant or the small metal healing cap should not wobble. Do not test it repeatedly with your tongue; contact your dentist instead.
